E.T. MacKenzie Co., Grand Ledge, Michigan, began demolishing the old Detroit House of Corrections facility in Plymouth Township to make way for a potential development site, a report by Crain’s Detroit Business says.
The Michigan Land Bank owns the property and is spending $1.87 million to tear it down. The 14-acre property closed in 2004 and has remained vacant. It is expected to be razed by early fall.
Environmental remediation must be done before any redevelopment of the property, the report says. The city of Detroit used the site as a dump several years ago.
Gov. Rick Snyder transferred $4 million to the Michigan Land Bank Fast Track Fund to rehabilitate the property, according to the report.
