WRAP Provides Funding for Major Plasterboard Recycling Facility

The allocation of nearly £65,000 (US$130,000) of funding from the Waste & Resources Action Programme to a Rotherham, UK, plasterboard recycling operation, will enable the major facility to process an additional 85,000 metric tons of waste plasterboard over the next five years.

The award by WRAP’s plasterboard capital funding competition to Roy Hatfield Ltd has enabled the recycling operation to make a series of improvements and additions to its facilities and introduce two significant new pieces of reprocessing equipment.

The funding will allow Roy Hatfield Ltd to double its storage capacity through the construction of a new covered bay capable of holding about 600 metric tons of waste plasterboard.

Mark Hatfield of Roy Hatfield Ltd, said: "As far as we are aware our plant is now the largest independent plasterboard recycling facility in the UK. This program of improvements helps us to consolidate that position, providing a quicker, more efficient and more competitive service to our customers."

Current estimates put the amount of plasterboard waste from UK C&D sites at around 900,000 metric tons per year. The UK’s current recycling capacity is around 500,000 metric tons per year.
