The United Kingdom-based Waste & Resources Action Programme (WRAP) says that its Halving Waste to Landfill program recently had its 500th signatory, representing potential U.K. construction contracts of more than £30 billion. WRAP launched the program in October 2008.
According to WRAP, the program is an industry-wide voluntary agreement introduced to help the construction industry meet the challenges set by the Strategy for Sustainable Construction.
“It’s wonderful that in just over two years, the commitment has attracted more than 500 signatories and that this number continues to grow daily. This really illustrates the desire of the industry to work in harmony to tackle waste,” says Mike Watson, WRAP’s head of construction.
Two of the most recent signatories are Hanson UK, a supplier of heavy building materials for the construction industry, and Barratt Development PLC, identified by WRAP as the largest home builder in the U.K.
“Hanson is firmly behind the WRAP commitment to halve construction waste to landfills,” says Martin Crow, Hanson U.K.’s head of sustainability. “Considerable efforts are made to ensure surplus materials are reused and do not become part of the waste stream. We are delighted to be part of this initiative."
