Wisconsin Award Nominees Announced

WasteCap Wisconsin R3 Awards ceremony honors construction waste diversion and recycling.

WasteCap Wisconsin is hosting its first ever R3 Awards on Thursday, Oct. 12, to honor “the state’s most successful professionals and businesses in reducing, reusing, and recycling construction debris that would otherwise go into landfills,” according to the group.

Representatives from the construction, architectural, environmental, engineering, and waste industries are being invited to the ceremony, which will be held at the Retzer Nature Center in Waukesha, Wis.

The R3 Award categories include: Outstanding Commitment, Outstanding Board Member, Outstanding Partner, Outstanding Volunteer, and the Big Diverter Award. The Big Diverter award is given to the current project with the highest recycling rate and nominees include some of the largest construction projects in the state.

Nominees for the Big Diverter Award include:

  • Boldt Construction, Appleton, Wis., for University of Wisconsin’s Interdisciplinary Research Complex in Madison
  • JH Findorff & Son, Madison, Wis., for UW Health American Family Children's Hospital in Madison
  • JH Findorff & Son for The Overture Center for the Arts in Madison

The award ceremony will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. and will include a presentation in the planetarium. Appetizers and beverages will be served at the beginning of the ceremony. WasteCap Wisconsin worked with the host Retzer Nature Center on its expansion project in 2004. The project’s final recycling rate was an impressive 82.17 percent, exceeding the original goal by more than 7 percent and diverting more than 140 tons of recyclable material from landfills.

The guest speaker is Secretary of the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Scott Hassett, an attorney in Madison and an avid outdoorsman who has led the DNR in several environmental initiatives. Gov. Jim Doyle appointed Hassett as DNR secretary in 2003.

WasteCap Wisconsin is a statewide nonprofit organization committed to educating and assisting others in their efforts to reduce waste. Over its 10 year history, WasteCap’s members and partners have diverted 150 million pounds of material from Wisconsin landfills, the group calculates. The R3 awards recognize the outstanding achievements of members and clients WasteCap Wisconsin has worked with over the past year.
