Contractor starts demolition on former Baylor stadium before being issued permit

Demolition of Waco Municipal Stadium will resume once the permit is issued.

Contractors scheduled to demolish parts of Waco Municipal Stadium, Waco, Texas, had to halt work earlier this week after the Waco Independent School District discovered that the contractor didn’t have the requisite permits in place from the city, the Waco Tribune-Herald reports.

City officials told the Waco Tribune-Herald that they were under the impression that work had not started on the stadium at the time of the discovery.

Waco Municipal Stadium, which was built in 1936 and once seated 20,000, served as a home to Baylor University’s football team before its replacement, Floyd Casey Stadium, was built in 1949. The stadium has since gone through many uses and had its original wooden seating replaced in the 1980s. Currently, the stadium is in use by Cesar Chavez Middle School.

Due to safety concerns, the Waco Independent School District contracted H.C.S. Inc., Waco, for $42,000 to remove the bleachers and the press box, the report said. However, work had to be stopped May 3 after the school district discovered the permit had not yet been issued, which is against the district’s contract.

The work will resume once the permit is issued.
