Vulcan Materials Co., Western Division Name Climate Action Leader

Aggregates producer recognized by the California Climate Action Registry.

Vulcan Materials Co., Western Division, has been designated as a Climate Action Leader by the California Climate Action Registry following verification of the company’s 2006 inventory report.

Vulcan’s Western Division produces construction aggregates, which are used in building roads, bridges, schools and just about anything else that requires a foundation.

Over the past several years, U.S. companies increasingly have begun to voluntarily track greenhouse gas emissions as part of their corporate sustainability programs. The Registry was originally established by California statute as a non-profit voluntary registry for greenhouse gas emissions, which has an established protocol widely accepted by state air regulators.

“We commend Vulcan for their hard work on voluntarily measuring and publicly reporting their greenhouse gas footprint and for their participation in the California Climate Action Registry’s rigorous program,” says Gary Gero, interim president, California Climate Action Registry.

Reporting greenhouse gases to the Registry is one part of Vulcan’s Western Division’s larger initiative to address the challenges of climate change. According to a press release from Vulcan, the company began to explore opportunities to quantify its contributions to reducing greenhouse gases at its facilities. For example, the design and construction of its newest aggregate plant in Corona, Calif., uses a downhill conveyor that generates electricity as it carries the rock to a processing plant below.
