Virginia C&D Facility Eyes May Start-Up

Equipment is being installed at a C&D debris recycling facility in Fauquier County, Va., that is scheduled to open in May of 2007.

According to a news release from consulting firm Gershman, Brickner & Bratton Inc. (GBB), Fairfax, Va., the county’s supervisors approved spending $1.2 million to purchase and install equipment at the facility, with Sherbrooke OEM Ltd. chosen as the key supplier.

The county has hired GBB to help put together a fast-track plan to handle the fast-growing county’s C&D debris stream in light of the pending closure of the county’s C&D landfill.

“In a fast-tracked procurement process, GBB brought invaluable insight,” says Fauquier County Director of Environmental Services Mike Dorsey. “The combination of GBB’s procurement experience and recognized C&D knowledge provided the county with the assurance that we were going in the right direction.”

The Sherbrooke OEM system being installed can handle more than 470 cubic yards per hour of mixed C&D debris, according to GBB. It was chosen from among six proposals sent to GBB and Fauquier County.

Located some 45 miles southwest of the District of Columbia, Fauquier County is one of Virginia’s fastest-growing counties, according to GBB.

The new facility is needed not only to handle the growing C&D stream in the county, but also to act as a revenue stream to replace the landfill that is closing. “The impending closure of our C&D landfill, which is anticipated to reach capacity in the spring of 2007, would have a significant impact on the funding of the county’s solid waste operations and provide a void for the management of C&D waste in the county,” says Dorsey.
