Demolition of a vacant mobile home park began Aug. 10 after city officials declared the area a hazard, a report by Fox13 says. The Green Park Residences mobile home park in Tampa, Florida, has been empty since 2012.
Before being demolished, the trailers had visible mold on the walls and garbage, such as broken windows and empty beer bottles, throughout the lot. According to the report, city code enforcers claimed the area was unlivable and nearby residents felt it wasn’t a safe space to let their children walk through.
The owner, Ross Scopelliti, took the city to court in an attempt to stop the demolition, the report says, but the city held an emergency meeting Wednesday, Aug. 9, residents said they wanted to park demolished. A judge agreed and allowed the demolition. The city has an ongoing foreclosure lawsuit with Scopelliti but it was put on hold after he filed for bankruptcy.
The project cost the city around $35,000 and officials say they plan to monitor the property to make sure it’s maintained.
