UWW Construction Site Recognized for Recycling

Building project earns award from WasteCap Wisconsin.

A demolition and construction project at the University of Wisconsin – Whitewater has earned a recycling award from WasteCap Wisconsin, according to a report in the Janesville Gazette (Janesville, Wis.)

Nearly 98 percent of the demolition debris generated by the demolition of three former residence halls was recycled. Material included steel beams, concrete blocks and aluminum window frames, according to the report.

The buildings were demolished to make room for the UW – Whitewater’s new College of Business and Economics Building.

The project was managed by Miron Construction and received the 2007 Big Diverter Award from WasteCap Wisconsin, a nonprofit organization that assists businesses in waste reduction and recycling.

Concrete was transported to Mann Brothers in Elkhorn, where it was crushed for use as road base and aggregate for new concrete. Wood was taken to Compost Management in Delavan, where it was shredded and used as landscaping mulch. Bottles, cans and office paper were recycled at Southern Lakes Recycling in Elkhorn.

According to the report, 13,694 tons of demolition debris were recycled.
