USG West Virginia Plant Earns Voluntary Protection Program Star Award

Company says only 2,000 of more than 7 million work sites have achieved VPP Star status.

Chicago-based USG Corp. has announced that its Weirton, W.V., plant has earned the Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) Star award for safety performance and processes. The award was given by representatives from the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).

The Weirton plant, which began production in 1999, manufactures building materials for homes and offices.
The Star is OSHA’s highest VPP award. According to a press release from USG, only 2,000 of more than 7 million U.S. worksites have achieved VPP Star status.
“This award belongs to all USG Weirton plant employees, whose hard work and dedication allowed us to make this facility one of the safest in the nation,” says Gregg Diefenbacher, Weirton plant manager. “USG’s No. 1 priority is safety. We are very proud of this accomplishment because it validates our commitment to safety excellence, which we practice every day.”
To qualify for VPP Star consideration, Weirton plant employees focused on hazard recognition, engineering controls, training and safe operating procedures during a period of several years. As a result of the efforts, plant employees achieved a high level of sustained safety performance that warranted applying for Star recognition, the company says.
As a result of the focus on safety, the plant recently celebrated more than 450,000 safe work hours without a lost-time injury. Additionally, the plant recently completed more than 2,362 days, or 6-and-one-half years, without a lost-time injury.
