University City, Mo., City Hall Earns LEED Certification

Diversion of construction debris during renovation helps building achieve green building certification.

The City Hall building in University City, Mo., has been awarded Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) for its recent building renovation.

The renovation project was designed and led by Trivers Associates, an architecture firm with offices in St. Louis and Edwardsville. William Tao and Associates provided mechanical engineering design.

Fifty percent of construction debris from the project was diverted from landfill and recycled. Additional green building features that helped the project earn its LEED certification include:

  • Smart panels, which turn lights off and on according to the time of day, improve energy efficiency
  • The conversion from single-glazed window sashes to insulated glass saves energy
  • Waterless urinals and dual-flush flushometers help conserve water
  • Energy efficient mechanical systems which includes providing ample outside air to improve indoor air quality
