The Ohio EPA has been monitoring a fire that is smoldering at Warren Recycling’s construction and demolition landfill in Warren, Ohio. The fire was first notice Feb. 20th when an inspector for the state’s EPA saw the underground fire.
The EPA has been issuing notices to the company, and Warren Recycling has attempted a number of steps to extinguish the fire.
Under its most recent strategy the company plans on digging a trench above the location of the fire and then allow water to seep into the fire, which, the company feels, will work to extinguish the fire.
The EPA has not filed any charges against the company over the fire. However, the Ohio EPA had initially opposed the issuing of a permit to Warren Recycling, although the company had received a permit anyway.
“Ultimately Warren has to put out the fire,” says Kara Allison, a spokeswoman for the Ohio EPA.
