A chimney located in Kent, England, was recently demolished and became known as the tallest concrete structure to be demolished in the U.K., a report by The Telegraph says. The Grain A Power Station chimney stood at 801 feet before it was demolished, more than double the height of Big Ben.
According to the report, the demolition created 40,000 tons of concrete rubble. The structure has been part of the area for more than 30 years.
The station opened in 1979 and produced enough electricity to power more than one million homes, the report says. The facility closed in 2012, and demolition began in April 2014.
There have been five separate demolition events to tear the main infrastructure of the plant down.
Since the project’s start, the report says, more than 84,000 tons of material has been removed from the site and recycled. The existing infrastructure has been used to build a 1,275 megawatt gas-fired power station.
Work is scheduled to continue through the remainder of the year, the report says.
