Two Charged with Asbestos Dumping in New Jersey

City expected to pay $100,000 for cleanup.

A Jersey City Incinerator Authority (JCIA) employee has been arrested on charges of illegally dumping construction and demolition debris containing asbestos in a vacant lot, according to reports in the Jersey Journal (Jersey City, N.J.)

The JCIA employee, Cordell Nesbitt, 37, was arrested along with John Caldwell, 46, an employee of a local landscape company, according to local media reports.

The Jersey Journal reports that the charges stem from an incident in April where JCIA employees found 150 bags of asbestos dumped at the site.

Nesbitt and Caldwell are accused of dumping batteries, tires and asbestos-laden debris in the city owned lot, according to the report.

The material’s origin is under investigation. The city is expected to pay $100,000 to clean up the site, according to the report.
