Twins Aim for Green Stadium

New Minneapolis ballpark could pursue LEED certification.

The proposed new ballpark for the Minnesota Twins could be the first major league ballpark to obtain Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification from the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), according to a report in Finance and Commerce (Minneapolis).

Stadium legislation, approved by the state Senate, states that LEED certification must be pursued as long as the ballpark authority obtains enough grant money to cover the cost of certification, according to the report. The legislation also requires the state departments of Commerce and Administration to cooperate in finding grants.

Groundbreaking on the project is still a year away, however, the site’s downtown location will give it access to mass transit, an advantage to earning points for LEED certification.

The new park is scheduled to open in downtown Minneapolis in four years.
