A proposed ordinance could make recycling mandatory for demolition contractors in Redondo Beach, Calif., according to a report in the Daily Breeze (Torrance, Calif.).
If approved, the ordinance would require demolition contractors to put down a $3,000 deposit and prepare a waste management plan for diverting material from a demolition sight. To avoid paying the deposit, applicants could contract with an independent recycler, the paper says.
According to the Breeze, Redondo Beach is following the lead of another South Bay community, Manhattan Beach, in getting tough on building demolition rules to comply with a state law that requires cities to divert 50 percent of their trash away from landfills.
