The Recycling Certification Institute (RCI), Sacramento, California, has announced that the Tommy Cart system from Richard S. Burns & Co. Inc., Philadelphia, has completed RCI’s rigorous review process, making the Tommy Cart system the first mixed construction and demolition (C&D) operation in Pennsylvania to become RCI-certified.
The Richard S. Burns and Co. facility is centered around a unique technology-driven way of collecting, tracking and processing commingled or source-separated construction debris. The material recovery process and Tommy Cart system designed by members of the Richard S. Burns and Co. team is an innovative cart distribution, collection and recovery tracking system that holds multiple U.S. patents for design and use, RCI says.

The system uses unique identification technology allowing carts to be assigned to a specific project site, client or tradesman, and is able to track waste from inception at the point of generation through collection, separation and recovery activities.
The technology aligns directly with materials management tracking and reporting requirements of projects following the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design rating system for green building certification, according to RCI.
