The Seattle City Council recently approved an ordinance that includes a timeline to demolish the Alaskan Way Viaduct, a report by King 5 News says. The ordinance calls for demolition to begin in 2019, starting with the portion between Pike and Columbia.
The ordinance says work can begin after the deep bored tunnel opens in late 2018, the report says. Demolition should take nine months to complete. The city also asked the Washington Department of Transportation to limit road closures to 30 days during the process.
A new walkway that connects the Pike Place market to the waterfront is expected to open soon after demolition. The report says the Pike Place Market Foundation is selling charms to hang from the new walkway.
