Arlington, Tex., and Tarrant Count, Tex., have begun a large demolition job that will make the way for the future Dallas Cowboys stadium.
The project will cover around 168 parcels of land, and the city hopes to have the demolition project completed by the first half of next year.
What is surprising for the project is the city is performing the demolition job, rather than a privately owned company.
The demolition project began Nov. 1, with the hope that all the demolition job will be completed by the spring of 2006.
Tarrant County is performing this work in accordance with an agreement approved on September 13 by the Arlington City Council and authorized by the Tarrant County Commissioners Court. Stadium construction is scheduled to begin in 2006. Opening day is planned for fall 2009.
The county has been working with Habitat for Humanity, which has pulled out some of the architectural features that could be resold. The county expects to do some recycling of the concrete and asphalt at a landfill where the material is being shipped.
A spokesman for the county says there are no plans to pull out ferrous metals or other types of recyclable materials once the demolition project begins.
The city is renting some equipment to perform the demolition project.
