Memphis and Southaven Mayors called for a State of Emergency as the storm downed thousands of power lines leaving more than 300,000 without electricity. The Terex Southaven facility was without power for two full days and the structure itself sustained damages in excess of $350,000. Additionally, some whole goods inventory sustained damage from downed power lines and blowing building debris. Employees could not exit the facility until the electric company lifted fallen power lines. Fortunately, none of the facility’s 200 employees were injured.
Once power was restored on Thursday morning, Terex initiated special measures to ensure that customers were satisfied as quickly as possible. The customer service group worked 10-hour days on Thursday and Friday, followed by an 8-hour day on Saturday attending to customers needs. In addition, on Thursday, all emergency and unit-down orders were shipped “freight free” to help offset the inconvenience caused by the storm. More than 500 emergency orders were filled on Thursday, more than twice that of a normal day. All departments chipped in to help answer the phones, ensuring that customers were fully operational in the shortest amount of time possible.
As with any disaster Terex is reviewing their emergency procedures to determine what, if any, measures should be taken to alleviate any inconveniences caused by such unpredictable events.
