A man working as a subcontractor for a Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum project in Washington D.C. died after he fell at the construction site on Sept. 28, reports The DC Post.
The man has been identified as 53-year-old Matthew Tomlin of District Heights in Prince George’s County.
According to The DC Post, Tomlin reportedly worked for Component Drywall, a subcontractor for three construction companies, Clark Construction Group LLC, Bethesda, Maryland; Smoot Construction Co., Columbus; and Consigli Construction Co. Inc., Milford, Maryland, which are in charge of construction upgrades to the museum.
Following the incident, Tomlin was taken to a hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries, according to the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD). The site was largely evacuated of workers. Both the DC police and the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) are investigating the death.
“Our deepest sympathies are with this gentleman’s family, friends, and co-workers during this incredibly difficult time,” the construction firms said in a press release.
“We take all matters involving the safety of our workforce, our job sites, and the public seriously. Clark/Smoot/Consigli and its subcontractors have started a full investigation and are cooperating with the proper authorities, including OSHA. Work in the area has been suspended until the onsite investigation is complete,” it continued.
In October 2018, the Smithsonian awarded Clark/Smoot/Consigli a six-year contract for the revitalization work of the National Air and Space Museum. The project is the museum’s first major renovation since it opened in 1976.
