State Committee Endorses C&D Burning Ban

Several bills regarding the burning of C&D material are being reviewed by the N.H. House.

The New Hampshire House Environmental and Agricultural Committee has endorsed a bill that would ban the burning of construction and demolition debris until the effects undergo further study, according to a report in the Concord Monitor (Concord, N.H.).

The bill is one of four dealing with the burning of C&D material under review by the House. A similar bill was voted down March 9, according to the Concord Monitor.

The proposed legislation was spurred by contention over the Bio Energy Corp. wood-burning energy plant in Hopkinton, N.H., which has been under fire since the state Department of Environmental Services granted it permits to burn C&D material at its facility last year, according to the report.

Another bill, which would require the state DES to adopt a set of criteria for testing C&D debris for hazardous material, is being retained by the committee, according to the report.

A fourth bill has been worked on by officials from the DES and Bio Energy. It would require companies like Bio Energy to install the best available pollution control equipment, according to the Concord Monitor. The bill is scheduled to go to the house on March 30.
