St. Louis University Joins Green Building Trend

Biomedical research building under construction to incorporate green building practices.

The $66 million biomedical research building currently under construction at St. Louis University will include a number of green building features, according to a report in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

As part of the green building process, a number of materials are being recycled as the building is constructed, including cardboard, wood and plastic conduit, according to the report.

Other green building features will include a vegetative roof that will cover a two-story section of the building to reduce storm runoff, many windows to increase natural light and a close proximity to public transportation.

Ground was broken on the 206,000-square-foot facility in June 2005. The building is expected to be completed by August 2007, and will house research in a number of areas, including cancer, liver disease, biodefense and vaccine development, according to the report.
