Spectra Partners with UTI for Use of Radar System

TerraVision system to be put to work in utility, construction and transportation applications in New York State.

Spectra Environmental Group Inc. and Spectra Engineering, Architecture & Surveying P.C., an engineering and environmental consulting firm headquartered in Latham, N.Y., has announced exclusive regional rights to “TerraVision,” a ground penetrating radar technology.

TerraVision offers utilities and the construction industry precision in locating underground assets such as gas and water lines and conduit.

“Accidental damage to gas, water and electric lines during construction is dangerous and costly,” says Robert. C. LaFleur, president of Spectra. “TerraVision gives Spectra’s clients more precision than current detection methods in location and mapping pipelines, conduit and other underground assets. It is an asset that Spectra will use for present clients and will market to the utility, construction and transportation industries.”

Spectra has formed an alliance with UIT, Underground Imaging Technology LLC of Iowa, for exclusive regional rights.

The TerraVision System can read and provide a three dimensional map of subsurface conditions along a 5-foot swath and up to 20 feet in depth.

With this technology utilities can locate with precision and assess conditions of conduit and pipelines, construction companies can plan excavations avoiding damage to below the ground systems, and construction and engineering companies and public agencies will be able to assess roadway and bridge conditions with high quality, accurate information not available today without excavation.

Spectra, formed in 1993, provides specialized engineering and consulting services to private and governmental clients in the areas of civil and railroad engineering, architecture, landfill remediation, air quality, water and wastewater and overall environmental compliance matters.

The Vermeer Company of Iowa, the international manufacturer of heavy construction, excavating and trenching equipment, and Pinnacle West Capital Corporation of Arizona formed UIT.
