Southern Waste Systems Wins Florida Award for Recycling Efforts

Company's Sun Recycling affiliate also recognized.


Lantana, Fla.-based Southern Waste Systems and its Sun Recycling affiliate company have been recognized by Enterprise Florida, a public-private partnership, for their recycling efforts.

Enterprise Florida honored the companies with the 2010 Governor’s Business Diversification Award in the category called “Green-to-Gold.” The award is given to Florida companies or organizations that, through product or process, best exemplify “green” leadership as it pertains to the state’s goals to become a leader in this emerging field.

Sun Recycling, which says it is Florida’s largest independent construction and demolition recycler, has 10 facilities located in Palm Beach, Broward and Miami-Dade counties. Collectively, the facilities recycle as much as 90 percent of the materials they process, according to the company.
In Broward County, Sun Recycling processes material for the Florida cities of Fort Lauderdale, Hallandale Beach, Deerfield Beach and Oakland Park and has recycling facilities in Dania Beach and Pompano Beach. In Palm Beach County, the company recycles materials for Lantana, Boynton Beach and Lake Worth, and has facilities in Lantana and West Palm Beach.
“We applaud all of these municipalities and other private businesses that have made a commitment to recycle,” says Charles Gusmano, CEO of Southern Waste Systems. “The only way the state’s goal is reachable is if more local governments get on board and make this a priority.”
Sun Recycling, a construction and demolition debris recycling company affiliated with Southern Waste Systems, operates facilities in the Florida cities of Pompano Beach, Dania Beach, West Palm Beach, Lantana, Deerfield Beach and Miami. Sun says that it recycles up to 90 percent of the construction and demolition debris that it collects.
