South Carolina County Weighs C&D Landfill Options

County commissioners of South Carolina’s Brunswick County have several options on the table concerning what to do when the county’s current construction and demolition debris landfill reaches capacity, according to a report in the Sun News (Myrtle Beach, S.C.).

If construction in the county continues at its current pace, the landfill will reach capacity in about one year. County commissioners are considering expanding the current facility, building a new landfill or closing the current landfill and hauling debris outside the county, according to the report.

County staff has estimated that it will cost nearly $31.8 million to haul the material from fiscal year 2011 through 2015, and $21.8 million to expand at the current site. However, building a new landfill could cost more than $16 million plus the cost of the 250 acres needed for it to last at least 25 years, according to the report.

A state moratorium on new landfills expires in August.

Commissioners will continue to discuss these options during the board’s upcoming budget deliberations, according to the report.
