South Carolina County Reconsiders C&D Landfill Issue

The issue of whether York County, S.C., needs more construction and demolition debris landfills is back on the table, according to a report in the Herald (Rock Hill, S.C.).

The county council has approved a motion to form a committee to write a new solid waste management plan after it recently approved a new plan on Feb. 28.

The new plan would have to go through three hearings, a process that is expected to take six months, according to the report.

The plan approved on Feb. 28 forbade the opening of any new C&D landfills in the county. A previous draft of the plan called for three more C&D landfills because the planning staff has estimated the county’s population growth would translate into some 325,000 tons of construction debris by 2025.

However, the plan that was approved used different projections resulting in less debris generation and no need for additional landfills.

That plan halted a proposed C&D landfill that was being developed by Greeneagle Co., according to the report.
