Sortera UK has completed the first phase of a multimillion-dollar project at its Edmonton, England, construction and demolition (C&D) materials sorting site near London.
The London-based recycling firm says the project is part of an ongoing program to enhance processing capacity, operational efficiency and sustainability performance.
The project, known internally as Project Mercury, represents the largest infrastructure upgrade undertaken by the business and marks a major milestone in Sortera’s continued growth, according to the firm.
The first of two new processing lines have been installed and entered commissioning, increasing the Edmonton site’s capacity and improving precision, speed and material recovery. A second system is set to follow in the upcoming months.
“Project Mercury is a landmark investment for Sortera,” says Ian Wilkinson, operations director at Sortera UK, which is not affiliated with Indiana-based metals sorting and technology firm Sortera Technologies Inc. but is a business unit of the Sweden-based Sortera Group.
Wilkinson says the Edmonton investment underlines the company's commitment to continuous improvement and long-term infrastructure growth.
Sortera UK says the investment will deliver gains in throughput and flexibility at the site, supporting the company’s commitment to maximizing recycling and resource recovery while minimizing environmental impact.
The Edmonton site also is receiving enhanced safety features, including advanced monitoring and fire prevention technology.
Northern Ireland-based engineering company CRS NI Ltd. has helped equip and install the new system and U.K.-based JCB is providing mobile material handling equipment to Sortera UK.
Sortera Group has more than 1,000 employees and sales of $380 million annually.
