The implosion of a smokestack in Indiana caused a large power outage when it damaged equipment at a closed power plant, a report by WTHR Eyewitness News says. Nearly 4,000 homes and businesses in Terre Haute, Indiana, lost electricity after the 500-foot smokestack near a former Duke Energy power plant came down.
The implosion occurred at the Wabash Valley Generating Station Jan. 27 and Rick Burger, Duke Energy district manager, says in the report dirt and debris from the stack was thrown into a relay control building and power had to be turned off to make repairs.
The smokestack implosion is part of an ongoing demolition at the coal-burning power plant that shut down in 2016.
