SENA Waste Services lands second contract with Canadian city

The city of Edmonton, Alberta, has awarded SENA Waste Services, a subsidiary of Suez Environnement North America, a five-year contract to operate and maintain the city’s 64,000-square-foot materials recovery facility (MRF). The value of the contract is worth up to $45 million. The MRF, one of the earliest single-stream plants in North America, went into service in 1998.

The contract calls for SENA to process about 55,000 tons per year, recycling mixed materials. In a news release, SENA notes that the contract comes on the heels of a separate five-year agreement awarded to SENA Waste Services to operate the Edmonton Composting Facility and provide maintenance support services for the Integrated Process and Transfer Facility and the construction and demolition facility. The composting facility and MRF enable Edmonton to divert up to 60 percent of residential waste from the landfill, the company says. 

Suez says the contract will significantly increase the recycling levels in the region. “We realize that the Edmonton Waste Management Centre is an important example of the progressive approach that Edmonton and Canada take towards environmental protection and our selection is a responsibility that we take very seriously,” says Bertrand Camus, CEO of Suez Environnement North America. “This is another huge vote of confidence in our capabilities that SENA Waste Services has displayed working with the city of Edmonton.”
