San Jose Tests Recycled Asphalt Pavement

City teams with Granite Construction Co. in use of RAP.

The city of San Jose, Calif., has teamed with Granite Construction Co., Watsonville, Calif., to place a test section of 500 tons of recycled asphalt pavement (RAP) on a section of street near city hall.

The section was laid prior to the arrival of the Amgen Tour of California, a professional bike race.

The city is interested in further use of RAP in overlay projects as well as crushed and recycled asphalt and concrete for road base. Additionally, working with Granite Construction Co. and others in the construction industry, the city is continuing to review the benefits of asphalt rubber, asphalt shingles, pervious concrete and asphalt and permeable landscape products.

The city is interested in using sustainable road building practices as part of its Green Vision, a strategy that addresses how environmental responsibility makes financial sense and stimulates economic opportunities.
