The program was recognized for its ongoing commitment to reducing the amount of military trash and debris entering the Miramar Landfill, which is scheduled to reach capacity in five years. According to the report, the landfill was originally scheduled to close in 2007, but through the Navy’s recycling efforts, the closing date has been extended to 2012.
The 30 members of the recycling program were credited with diverting several kinds of recyclable materials, including debris from construction and demolition projects, as well as cardboard, glass, plastics and paper.
