Following the adoption of a voluntary program in late 2004, city officials in San Diego have started developing measures to make recycling mandatory for construction companies, according to a report in the San Diego Union-Tribune.
The construction and demolition recycling mandate will be coupled with mandatory residential and commercial recycling programs in hopes of bolstering the city’s recycling rate, which at 44 percent is lagging behind the 50 percent state required minimum, according to the report.
As part of the effort to increase diversion rates to meet state standards and avoid fines up to $10,000 per day, San Diego is also considering installing a new facility to sort C&D debris.
