A concrete crushing company in Pensacola, Florida, held a town hall meeting in early May with community members as part of its operating permit renewal process, a report by WEARTV says. Residents told Sunbelt Crushing LLC, headquartered in Mobile, Alabama, about odor and dust concerns throughout the community.
Sunbelt has been crushing concrete at its Pensacola location for 14 years, the report says, and were recently required to obtain a permit by Escambia County. County Commissioner Lumon May also requires a town hall meeting as part of the process.
The Wedgewood and Rolling Hills neighborhoods, where Sunbelt is located, are also home to several other recycling operations, landfills and pits. According to the report, pollution has been a subject of discussion in these neighborhoods before.
The company recently spent $30,000 to put up a fence to contain dust and, according to company attorney Todd Harris, it also met all requirements necessary for operation by state and county.
According to the report, feedback at the town hall will be given to the county commissioners and will be used during the deliberation process. No date for a decision has been set.
