Long Island, New York, residents claim nearby concrete recycling plants have become a nuisance, a report by CBS New York says.
Several families who live near the industrial park on the New Cassel-Westbury border have told the CBS affiliate that they are concerned with the dust, truck traffic and the sound of crushing, the report says. One family claims they are concerned with using their backyard pool and barbecue because of dust expelling from the plants.
Another family is concerned with the plants for safety reasons. One resident told CBS New York that he has sickle cell and cannot go outside often because of the air pollution. Nearby church members have also complained about heavy cement and concrete truck traffic.
An incident of one plant illegally dumping cement into a storm water pipe, which caused the community center to be damaged, caused town officials to submit plans to ban the release of concrete into the waste water system and require plants to curtail hours.
Following a public hearing, a vote to regulate the recycling plants took place on Aug. 16.
