Recycling Events Scheduled

Carpet conference will be in May 2004 in Georgia; re-use advocates to gather in San Francisco in September.

The Ninth Annual conference on the Recycling of Fibrous Textile and Carpet Waste has been scheduled for May 2004 in Dalton, Ga.

The event, co-sponsored by several entities, will take place May 10-11 at the North West Georgia Trade & Convention Center in Dalton, Ga.

The Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech), the Georgia Department of Natural Resources and the industry group CARPET are co-sponsoring and organizing the event.

The event is being billed by the groups as “a forum to exchange information on the latest developments in polymer and fibrous waste recycling technologies and applications,” relating to the 14 billion pounds of textile and carpet materials disposed of in landfills each year in the U.S.

Topics covered may include chemical processes, mechanical separation, extrusion, recycling logistics, life cycle analysis and waste characterization as they relate to carpet recycling.

More information on the event can be found at www.pfte.gatech.edu/recycle_conf. Those interested in making a presentation or exhibiting with a tabletop display can call Dr. Youjiang Wang at Georgia Tech at (404) 894-7551.

Also recently announced, the Deconstruction & Building Materials Reuse Conference, the annual conference and meeting of the Used Building Materials Association, has been scheduled for Sept. 1-3, 2004, in the San Francisco Bay area.

Among the planned topics are used building materials markets; designing for deconstruction and reuse; deconstruction case studies; and, wood reuse opportunities and barriers.

No specific site has been chosen yet to host the event, but updates will be provided at www.deconstructioninstitute.org.
