For the past two years, the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) has allowed contractors to put used shingles into asphalt mix. The use of recycled shingles saves $3 to $5 per ton of asphalt, according to the report.
Shingle recycling also helps MoDOT reduce the petroleum used in road construction projects.
The department reduces the amount of liquid asphalt in a mix design by 20 to 25 percent by using recycled shingles, according to the report.
