Solid waste officials in Harvey County, Kan., have given tons of old asphalt shingles new life, according to a report in the Kansan (Newton, Kan.).
According to the report, 60 tons of ground asphalt shingles—as well as 200 tons of crushed concrete—have been used as roadbase for sections of paving projects in the county, including the perimeter of Sand Creek Station Golf Course.
Ground shingles have been used in the past as a driving surface at the county’s construction and demolition debris landfill and in some parking areas, but this is the first time the material is being used in standard public paved roads, according to the report.
