Recycled Rubber Tested in Pennsylvania Paving Applications

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (DOT) is testing asphalt made with crumb rubber on 10 miles of Route 194 this winter, according to a report in the Patriot News (Harrisburg, Pa.).

The stretch of road runs between Franklintown and East Berlin in Adams and York counties.

While the rubber asphalt resurface costs about twice as much as oil and stone chips, the material creates a longer lasting road surface, requires less maintenance and lowers road noise, according to the U.S. EPA.

About 16,000 rubbers tires are being put to use in the resurfacing of Route 194, according to the report.
