Proposed C&D Landfill Meets Resistance in Alabama

A proposal to build a construction and demolition debris landfill in Lowndes County, Ala., has met strong opposition from residents in early public hearings, according to a report in the Montgomery Advertiser (Montgomery, Ala.).

More than 120 people attended a public hearing on July 24 in the Lowndes County Commission chambers, while more than 400 more listened through speakers set up outside, according to the report.

Alabama River Partners LLC has proposed to put the project on a 900-acre site along the Alabama River near the Montgomery County-Lowndes County line. It would include a C&D landfill, sand and gravel mining operation and an inland port. As part of the plan, sand and gravel will be shipped by barge to the Gulf Coast to aid in hurricane clean up efforts, while debris from the New Orleans area will be brought back to the landfill.
