ProLogis Distribution Center Gets LEED Certification

Chicago warehouse has been leased to Anixter International.

ProLogis, a Denver-based manager and developer of distribution facilities, has announced that a 467,000-square-foot building it developed in Chicago has been recognized by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC).

The distribution center was built for Anixter International, a distributor of wiring, cable and other communications products. Built in 2004, the warehouse has been certified under the USGBC’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program.

The facility is located outside Chicago in the village of Alsip, Ill. It serves an Anixter’s primary distribution center for small and unique parts serving the communications, electrical and electronic wire and cable industries. Green building features that helped it achieve its LEED certification include:

  • Extensive use of recycled and locally sourced materials during construction,
  • Skylights and clearstory windows that increase natural daylight to interior areas, reducing electricity usage,
  • Energy-efficient fluorescent lighting,
  • High-efficiency roof insulation for greater resistance to thermal heat transfer, and
  • Bicycle racks and on-site shower facilities, as well as an on-site carpooling program.

Anixter’s distribution center was designed by Heitman Architects Inc., Itasca, Ill.
