Iowa recycling center set to open

The new Pottawattamie County Recycling Center in Oakland, Iowa, is set to open to the public Jan. 30, The Daily Nonpareil reports.

The center will now allow residents to recycle mixed paper, plastics No. 1 to No. 5, tin and cardboard, according to the county’s Planning and Development Office.

“We’re excited. People are ready to help us expand recycling and recycle more around the county,” Jake Head, Pottawattamie County Recycling Center manager, says according to the report.

The facility will replace the county’s transfer station in Hancock, Iowa, and enable the county to expand its range of offerings. The facility will also carry on all of the Hancock facility’s services, including major appliance, scrap metal, tire and household hazardous waste (HHW) recycling.

“The recycling center and expansion of services is exciting,” Matt Wyant, director of Planning and Development at Pottawattamie County, says according to the report. “We will still have the same services, including accepting household trash and construction debris, that are at the transfer station, while shifting our focus to reducing, reusing and recycling.”

The county purchased the land the building is located on in July 2017. Since then, renovations have been underway to get the center ready for use.
