Vegetation catches fire at Iowa C&D plant

Phoenix C&D Recycling fire prompts air quality cautions.

A fire at Phoenix C&D Recycling in Des Moines prompted fire officials to order residents to keep their windows closed and put air conditioners on recirculating mode, according to a report from the local CBS affiliate KCCI 8.

The fire occurred Thursday, July 6, at approximately 4:30 p.m. Piles of vegetation at the facility around two to three stories high caught fire. Multiple fire departments were dispatched to get the blaze under control.

Polk County Health Department officials and fire fighters were assessing the air quality to make sure there are no hazardous materials were in the smoke. No injuries were reported. As a precaution, residents were asked to close their windows and set their air conditioning units to recirculating. It was not clear how long that order would last.
