Padnos seeks to build new shredder plant

Holland, Michigan-based scrap recycling company Padnos is making plans to open a new scrap yard with an auto shredding plant in Howell, Michigan, about 50 miles west of Detroit. Padnos is based in the Grand Rapids area in the western part of Michigan’s lower peninsula, meaning the location in Howell would represent a move closer to Detroit, which is on Michigan’s eastern shore.

Padnos has filed for an air permit request tied to its proposed shredder installation, according to a Nov. 9 online report by Howell-based radio station WHMI.

The scrap company established a footprint in Howell in the summer of 2019, when it purchased a location there from the former Regal Recycling Inc. That acquisition raised the number of Padnos locations to 19.

The WHMI report indicates Padnos has encountered opposition from some Howell residents and city agencies while at the same time gaining support from others.

The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy (EGLE) has been accepting public comments before it will issue a final ruling on the proposed air permit, according to WHMI.
