OSHA partners with contractors to promote safety

Construction of the Continental Tire Main Plant in Mississippi prompted the partnership.

The U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has signed a strategic partnership with Mississippi State University’s Center for Continuing Education Industrial Health & Safety Program and Brasfield & Gorrie LLC, based in Birmingham, Alabama, to promote worker safety and health at the Continental Tire Main Plant project in Clinton, Mississippi. The partnership seeks to prevent injuries and exposure to hazards during the construction of the 750,000-square-foot facility.

Under the agreement, the partners will encourage contractors to develop and implement safety and health programs and provide safety and health training to employees, employers, and supervisors.

Through the Strategic Partnership Program, OSHA works with employers, employees, professional and trade associations, labor organizations, and other interested stakeholders to establish specific goals, strategies, and performance measures to improve worker safety and health.

Set to open in late 2019, the $1.45 billion Continental Tire Main Plant will produce large truck and bus tires. Brasfield & Gorrie is the project’s main contractor. Mississippi State University’s Center for Continuing Education Industrial Health & Safety Program provides free, confidential, on-site consultation services to small businesses in Mississippi that need assistance in identifying and correcting occupational safety and health hazards.

Under the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, employers are responsible for providing safe and healthful workplaces for their employees. OSHA's role is to help ensure these conditions for America's working men and women by setting and enforcing standards and providing training, education, and assistance.
