OmniSource Opens Recycling Facility in Michigan

OmniSource Corp., a subsidiary of Steel Dynamics Inc., Fort Wayne, Ind., has opened its newest metals recycling facility in Coldwater Township in south central Michigan. A spokesperson for OmniSource says the new facility gives the company 10 locations in the state. The company has a total of around 70 scrap recycling plants in North America.

Retail traffic will be the focus of the new facility, according to the company, although the site also will be able to handle scrap metal generated from industrial sources.

The new facility, on 6.5 acres of land, will take in both ferrous and nonferrous scrap. According to a local press report, the property will have swales on one side of the facility that will allow the company to catch any storm water at the site.

Additionally, the facility will use a large portion of the acreage for handling auto parts. The property will have more than 400 vehicles on site to allow customers to salvage used parts. Once the auto parts are sold, the hulks will be shipped to OmniSource’s auto shredder in Jackson, Mich.
