Nucor says current quarter will offer leaner profits

The steelmaker and metals recycler has issued guidance predicting an approximate 20 percent drop in quarter-on-quarter profits.

Steelmaking and metals recycling company Nucor Corp. has announced guidance for its third quarter 2025 financial period, predicting a roughly 20 percent drop in earnings per diluted share (EPS) compared with the previous quarter but potentially doubling its EPS from one year earlier.

The guidance announcement from Charlotte, North Carolina-based Nucor, Charlotte predicts third quarter 2025 EPS in the range of $2.05 to $2.15 per diluted share compared with an EPS of $2.60 per diluted share in the previous quarter and $1.05 per diluted share in the third quarter of 2024.

Earnings in the third quarter of 2025 are expected to decrease across all three operating segments compared with the second quarter of 2025, according to Nucor, which makes recycled-content steel in electric arc furnaces (EAFs), processes recycled steel and nonferrous metal in its David J. Joseph (DJJ) business unit and offers finished and semifinished steel products for the construction and infrastructure sectors.

The expected decrease in the steel mills segment earnings is primarily due to lower volumes coupled with margin compression, Nucor says, adding that it anticipates lower earnings in its raw materials segment due to lower profitability in its scrap processing operations, including the DJJ network of recycling facilities.

In its downstream steel products segment, Nucor's third quarter earnings are expected to decrease because of higher average costs per ton for materials, although it experienced stable average realized pricing and volumes in the segment.

The Nucor guidance differs in some aspects from that issued earlier in the week by fellow EAF producer and metals recycler Steel Dynamics Inc. (SDI), Fort Wayne, Indiana.

SDI anticipates improved third quarter earnings from its three operating platforms, which line up roughly with those of Nucor.

“Third quarter 2025 earnings from the company’s metals recycling operations are expected to be significantly stronger than second quarter sequential results, based on steady shipments and [a] stronger ferrous metal spread,” SDI says.

Nucor plans to release its earnings Oct. 27 and will host a conference call the next day.
