Residents in Pictou County, Nova Scotia, are able to drop off their clean gypsum board at the Pictou County Solid Waste construction and demolition (C&D) site to be turned into compost, a report by The News says. Susan MacDonald of the department says that the gypsum board will absorb the moisture from the organics and will make a good addition to its composting operations.
She says in the report only board without paint, screws or nails will be accepted, but is accepted either wet or dry. The gypsum board will be stored in an open container until it’s taken to the composting facility. It will then be shredded and added to the organic material that comes from curbside green carts.
Residents can put their clean gypsum board in containers on-site, the report says. The diversion is designed to help the local landfill increase its organic count and reduce the amount of waste going to the landfill.
The report says this is the third program that Pictou County Solid Waste has implemented. The county recently began accepting cat litter in compost bins and Styrofoam in recycling.
