North Carolina DENR Investigates Illegal C&D Dumping

Open pit found full of debris.

The North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources has taken over the investigation of illegal dumping of construction and demolition debris at a site in Newport, N.C., according to a report in the Sun Journal (New Bern, N.C.).

The solid waste section of the NCDENR’s Waste Management Division has been notified of the discovery of an open pit filled with a variety of C&D debris at Sytron Construction, Morehead City, N.C., according to the report. The company’s permit only allows it to have land clearing and inert debris at the Newport location.

The Carteret County Sheriff’s Department turned the investigation over since the state environmental agency has more authority to issue penalties like fines and clean-up orders, according to the report.
