North American Dismantling Corp. (NADC), Lapeer, Michigan, has begun demolition work on the Shiras Steam Plant in Marquette, Michigan, TV 6 reports.
The Marquette Board of Light and Power (MBLP) met Aug. 27 and subsequently awarded NADC the bid to continue the next phase of demolition for the retired coal-fired power plant.
While parts of the facility have already been removed, NADC will be charged with taking down the plant’s main structure and removing materials from the site.
Operations at the Shiras Steam Plant originally began in 1967. MBPL shut the plant in June 2018 and moved operations to the Marquette Energy Center, which resulted in a 90 percent reduction of emissions and less ash sent to landfill.
MBLP began shipping ash, dirt and coal from the site in May to a nearby landfill in Manistique, Michigan, where it was used to help stabilize the site.
